Satellite footage of Hurricane Irma making landfall in western Florida, USA on 10 September 2017. Irma first made landfall on the Leeward Islands as a category 5 storm with sustained winds of 295 kilometres per hour (km/h) in the early morning of the 6th September. First hit was Barbuda, where over 90% of buildings were destroyed. Significant damage and loss of life were reported on the other Leeward Islands and islands of the north east Caribbean as Irma continued northwards. Irma hit Florida as a category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 215 km/h, weakening as she moved up the state. At least 82 people were killed in storm-related incidents in Florida and billions of dollars worth of damage was done to buildings and infrastructure.
