River Cuckmere meander. Aerial footage of a meander in the River Cuckmere as its nears its estuary. A meander is a wide and sinuous bend in the course of a river, and is a typical feature of rivers in the later stages of their course. The flow of the water erodes the outside of the bend while depositing material on the inside, which causes the meander to increase in size. Often, the river eventually cuts through the narrowest part of the land at the neck of the meander, which isolates the bend and leads to the formation of an oxbow lake.
