The Moon, rotating during a lunar day, starting and finishing on the side seen from the Earth. The Moon's rotation on its axis with respect to the stars (the sidereal period) takes 27 Earth days, 7 hours and 43 minutes 12 seconds. The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. Its diameter is 3476 kilometres. The Moon does not have an atmosphere and is a heavily cratered and barren piece of rock. The Moon's dark areas (maria) are craters filled by ancient lava flows. The Moon is one of the largest natural satellites in the Solar System, and, among planetary satellites, the largest relative to the size of the planet it orbits (its primary).
