Ancient Saharan rock. True-colour satellite image. North is at top. Although the desert sands are orange, much of the Sahara comprises barren rock, seen as these darker colours. Three large rock massifs are seen. From left to right: the Tassili,Tadrart-Acacus and Amask massifs. The majority of the land lies in Algeria, with the Algeria-Libya border at centre right. Ancient river beds are seen in the rock. Fossil evidence shows that this area was wet,and had forests, wild animals and human hunters, until it dried out about 5000 years ago.
