Mink flea, coloured scanning electron microscopy (SEM) footage. Fleas (order: Siphonaptera) are flightless insects that feed on the blood of their host. The host for this flea was a European mink (Mustela lutreola). This footage shows the head parts of the flea, showing the helmet-shaped head that helps the flea when moving through the fur of its host. The comb-like spines (ctenidia) anchor the flea in its host's fur. The mouthparts are modified to pierce the host's skin and suck blood. The field-of-view at the start of the clip is around 1000 by 2000 micrometres | |
