Apollo 11 press centre. The Apollo 11 mission to the Moon took place from 16-24 July 1969. The astronauts forming the three-man crew were mission commander Neil Armstrong, Lunar Module pilot Buzz Aldrin and Command Module pilot Michael Collins. The Apollo 11 mission was the first landing by humans on the Moon, with Armstrong and Aldrin descending to the surface in the Lunar Module, while Collins remained in orbit in the Command Module. The progress of the mission was reported worldwide to an audience of hundreds of millions, through newspapers, television and radio.
