Apollo 11 mission control during Moon landing. Apollo 11 capcom Charlie Duke talks to the crew during the powered descent to the lunar surface. He is in NASA's Mission Operations Control Room (MOCR) in Houston, Texas, USA. This critical part of the mission involved the Apollo 11 lunar module LM-5 Eagle being safely piloted to its landing on the surface of the Moon at 20:17:40 UTC on 20 July 1969. The two crew members of the 'Eagle' were US astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong. Armstrong piloted the module, with Aldrin calling out velocity and altitude data. After landing, Armstrong shut down the engines, finished the landing checklist, and transmitted the famous message: 'Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed'. | |
