Silica fibre production in a research laboratory. This is a fibre drawing tower that is used to produce the latest developments in optical fibres for telecommunications and other applications. This advanced facility is capable of producing a wide variety of specialist fibres with complex structures, enabling research into high-power fibre lasers and advanced telecommunications and sensing devices. These facilities are part of the clean rooms of the Zepler Institute at the University of Southampton, UK. The newly extended fibre tower (2017) is being used for research by the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC).
