Composite extreme ultraviolet footage from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) of an X9.3 solar flare. This is the largest flare so far in the current solar cycle, which started in December 2008 and lasts approximately 11 years. It is one of a series of flares that were emitted from active region 2673 in early September 2017. A flare is a sudden, rapid, and intense variation in brightness that occurs when magnetic energy that has built up in the solar atmosphere is suddenly released. Data obtained on 6th September 2017 at 171 angstrom wavelength. | |
