Composite extreme ultraviolet footage from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) of two X-class (the most intense) solar flares. An X2.2 flare is followed by an X9.3 flare. These are part of a series of flares that were emitted from active region 2673 in early September 2017. The X9.3 flare is the largest so far in the current solar cycle, which started in December 2008 and lasts approximately 11 years. A flare is a sudden, rapid, and intense variation in brightness that occurs when magnetic energy that has built up in the solar atmosphere is suddenly released. Earth is shown for scale. Data obtained on 6th September 2017 at 171 angstrom wavelength. | |
