View from the Space Shuttle Atlantis of the external fuel tank being jettisoned shortly after launch. The external fuel tank of the Space Shuttle contained liquid hydrogen and oxygen, which it fed to the main engine on the Shuttle itself. It also served as the anchor point for the two solid rocket boosters (SRBs), which provided most of the thrust during take-off. In a normal Shuttle launch, the SRBs burnt out after two minutes and were jettisoned and recovered after parachuting into the ocean. The external tank was jettisoned shortly afterwards, and was never recovered or reused. Filmed during the mission STS-112, which launched on 7th October 2002. The film has been sped up. | |
