Valentina Tereshkova's wedding celebrations, 1963. Footage of Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova (born 1937) with Soviet officials and fellow cosmonauts, celebrating her wedding. Tereshkova, the first woman in space, was selected in February 1962. Her historic space flight took place on the Vostok 6 mission of 16-19 June 1963. later that year, she married fellow cosmonaut Andriyan Nikolayev at the Moscow Wedding Palace on 3 November 1963 (the couple are shown hugging and walking together and holding flowers). This footage includes Yuri Gagarin, driving the boat (0:30). The celebrations include Tereshkova being feted with flowers, being greeted by crowds, and taking part in a boat trip. She and her husband (in uniform) are also shown sawing a log (0:36), a traditional wedding celebration, and watching the sunset from the boat. Also present is cosmonaut Valery Bykovsky who flew on Vostok 5, a joint mission with Vostok 6. |
