Atomic bomb destruction, Nagasaki, Japan. Footage of the ruins of Nagasaki Prison in Nagasaki, Japan, part of the destruction caused by the atomic bomb dropped by a US bomber on 9 August 1945 during World War II. These buildings were around 300 metres from ground zero. The cell block shown here was completely demolished. The only structures still intact are the concrete smokestack of the boiler house, a water tower, and a large boiler (orange). The latter two are shown in close-up at the end of the clip. The atomic explosion, equivalent to 21, 000 tons of TNT, destroyed an area several kilometres across, killing an estimated 75, 000 people. This was the second atomic bomb used in warfare, following the atomic bomb over Hiroshima three days earlier. Over 220, 000 people died in both cities, and tens of thousands were injured. Japan surrendered a few days later. |
