Milky Way variable stars. VISTA survey infrared footage of variable stars in the central region of the Milky Way galaxy (in the constellation of Sagittarius). The variable stars within the field of views are marked with circles. They are seen brightening and fading at regular intervals. The final part of this clip zooms in on one of the newly discovered RR Lyrae stars (marked with a red circle), which are too faint to be seen clearly in the large field of view. These ancient stars may be the remains of the most massive and oldest surviving star cluster of the entire Milky Way. VISTA is the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy.
