Apollo 11 worldwide tour, Guam, October 1969. Footage of the official exchange of gifts to and from the Apollo 11 astronauts during the Guam leg of the global Presidential Goodwill Tour that took place from 29 September to 5 November 1969. The footage starts with a welcome banner from the village of Piti. The Governor (Carlos Camacho) and his wife present the astronauts and their wives with gifts. From right to left: Neil Armstrong, his wife Janet, Mike Collins, his wife Patricia, Buzz Aldrin, and his wife Joan. They all drink a toast and the governor is presented with an official signed lunar photograph. Officially called the Giantstep Apollo 11 tour, the route took the Apollo 11 astronauts and their entourage to 27 cities in 22 countries over a period of 37 days. NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Mike Collins were the crew of the historic Apollo 11 mission (16-24 July 1969), achieving the first landing by humans on the Moon on 20 July 1969. Around 100 million people turned out across the world to see the men who had been to the Moon. The island of Guam is a US territory in the western Pacific Ocean. A NASA tracking station on Guam helped ensure the safe return of the Apollo 11 astronauts. The visit to Agana (now Hagatna), Guam, took place from 2-3 November 1969. |
