Apollo 11 worldwide tour, Guam, October 1969. Footage of the Apollo 11 astronauts and their wives arriving and being greeted by dignitaries at the airport on the Guam leg of the global Presidential Goodwill Tour that took place from 29 September to 5 November 1969. The plane used was the Vice-President's plane, and it was crewed by Air Force presidential pilots and crew. Descending from the aircraft and shaking hands with the dignitaries are Neil Armstrong, his wife Janet, Mike Collins, his wife Patricia, Buzz Aldrin, and his wife Joan. The visitors are decorated with garlands and they walk to a podium for the official speeches. A banner references preschool deaf children. A band plays the national anthem. At the end of the clip, a welcome banner references the nearby NASA tracking station. Officially called the Giantstep Apollo 11 tour, the route took the Apollo 11 astronauts and their entourage to 27 cities in 22 countries over a period of 37 days. NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Mike Collins were the crew of the historic Apollo 11 mission (16-24 July 1969), achieving the first landing by humans on the Moon on 20 July 1969. Around 100 million people turned out across the world to see the men who had been to the Moon. The island of Guam is a US territory in the western Pacific Ocean. The NASA tracking station on Guam helped ensure the safe return of the Apollo 11 astronauts. The visit to Agana (now Hagatna), Guam, took place from 2-3 November 1969. |
