Footage of the Apollo 11 astronauts meeting the Shah of Iran during the Tehran leg of the global Presidential Goodwill Tour that took place from 29 September to 5 November 1969. The footage starts with Janet Armstrong and Joan Aldrin. At 0:12, Neil Armstrong is showing a rocket model to the Empress consort (Shahbanu) of Iran (Farah Pahlavi) and two of her children. Buzz Aldrin is seated next to the Shahbanu. The Shah of Iran (Mohammad Reza Pahlavi) is shown from 0:36, talking to Mike Collins. From 0:43, he presents all three Apollo 11 astronauts with awards. Officially called the Giantstep Apollo 11 tour, the route took the Apollo 11 astronauts and their entourage to 27 cities in 22 countries over a period of 37 days. NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Mike Collins were the crew of the historic Apollo 11 mission (16-24 July 1969), achieving the first landing by humans on the Moon on 20 July 1969. Around 100 million people turned out across the world to see the men who had been to the Moon. The visit to Tehran, Iran, took place from 24-26 October 1969. |
