Apollo 11 parade, Wapakoneta, Ohio, September 1969. Footage of the public lining the streets at the homecoming parade held on 6 September 1969 in Wapakoneta, Ohio, USA, to honour US astronaut Neil Armstrong, who was born here. Armstrong and two other US astronauts (Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins) had achieved the first landing by humans on the Moon on 20 July 1969 as part of NASA's Apollo 11 mission (16-24 July 1969). Over the following months, the Apollo 11 astronauts took part in numerous national and worldwide tours to mark their historic achievement. Tens of thousands of people attended this parade, with a similar one held the same day in the hometown of Buzz Aldrin in New Jersey. Part of this footage shows Upper Sandusky, where Armstrong spent part of his childhood. |
