Visualising magnetic tape field patterns. Footage of a magnetic visualiser being used to view the magnetic field patterns produced by magnetic tape. This is quarter-inch film tape. The visualiser contains a fluid with a suspension of magnetic iron-containing particles (in this case they are rusty, hence the red colour). These iron particles align with the magnetic field from the tape. The form of magnetic particles used in magnetic tapes (iron oxide) is iron oxide, the same as used in the visualiser.
