Challenger disaster, crew spacewalk training session. Footage of members of the crew taking part in a training session for mission STS-51-L, flown by the Space Shuttle Challenger on 28 January 1986. The shuttle disintegrated just over a minute after launch, killing all seven on board. The members of the crew were US astronauts Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, Ronald McNair, US engineer Gregory Jarvis, and US high school teacher Christa McAuliffe. The crew selection for this mission took place in 1985. This footage shows crew members Ronald McNair and Ellison Onizuka being trained to carry out spacewalks in spacesuits, with the free-fall conditions in Earth orbit replicated by underwater training. Between 1980 and 1998, this training was carried out by NASA at the Weightless Environment Training Facility at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, USA. |
