Presidential tour of Cape Canaveral. Footage of the motorcade for the tour by US President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) of the NASA facilities at Merrit Island, near Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, on 16 November 1963. The cars are approaching a blockhouse (conical structure on left) from where launches are controlled (launch tower at right, orange). The end of this clip shows the cars arriving at the Gemini briefing part of the tour, with the capsule and waiting astronauts and crew. This was Kennedy's third visit to Cape Canaveral, taking place a week before his assassination. During this tour, Kennedy was also briefed on the Apollo programme and took an aerial tour of the facility. The site was renamed the Kennedy Space Center in his honour on 29 November 1963. |
