Presidential helicopter tour of Cape Canaveral. Footage of the departure of the helicopter (designated Marine One) carrying US President John F. Kennedy on an aerial tour of NASA facilities at Merrit Island, near Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, on 16 November 1963. Kennedy had toured the facilities by car and air, being briefed on the Gemini and Apollo programmes by NASA officials and scientists. After the aerial tour, Kennedy went by helicopter to the ship USS Observation Island to view a submarine launch of a Polaris nuclear missile. This was Kennedy's third visit to Cape Canaveral, taking place a week before his assassination. The site was renamed the Kennedy Space Center in his honour on 29 November 1963. |
