President Kennedy's helicopter tour of Cape Canaveral. Footage of US President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) arriving by motor car for the helicopter part of his tour of NASA facilities at Merrit Island, near Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, on 16 November 1963. He is accompanied to the helicopter (Marine One) by German-US aerospace engineer Wernher von Braun, as well as NASA Administrator James Webb. After the aerial tour he went by helicopter to the ship USS Observation Island to view a submarine launch of a Polaris nuclear missile. During this tour, Kennedy was also briefed on the Gemini and Apollo programmes. This was Kennedy's third visit to Cape Canaveral, taking place a week before his assassination. The site was renamed the Kennedy Space Center in his honour on 29 November 1963. |
