President Kennedy viewing Saturn V rocket. Footage of US President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) during the Saturn V part of his tour of NASA facilities at Merrit Island, near Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, on 16 November 1963. Kennedy was accompanied by German-US aerospace engineer Wernher von Braun, the lead designer of the rocket, as well as NASA Administrator James Webb. They are with Kennedy as he leaves to get into his motor car for the next part of the tour. Von Braun is to Kennedy's right and Webb (talking to Kennedy) to his left. The Saturn V rocket was used in the Apollo programme to reach the Moon. During this tour, Kennedy was also briefed on the Gemini programme and took an aerial tour of the facility. This was Kennedy's third visit to Cape Canaveral, taking place a week before his assassination. The site was renamed the Kennedy Space Center in his honour on 29 November 1963. |
