President Kennedy's NASA tour in Houston. Footage of the tour of NASA's newly established Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas, USA, by US President John F. Kennedy on 12 September 1962. The model shown at the start of the clip is a mock-up of the lunar lander, also known as 'the Bug'. Kennedy arrives at 0:43, accompanied by the Director of the Manned Spacecraft Center, Dr Robert Gilruth. He is shown a mock-up of an Apollo command module and is seen entering and leaving it. In 1961, Kennedy had pledged that the USA would achieve a Moon landing before the end of the decade. This led to a massive expansion of NASA and the Apollo moon programme, including the establishment of this centre in Houston (later named the Johnson Space Center). Kennedy visited several of the newly established space centres in September 1962, visiting the Houston NASA facilities in the late morning of 12 September following his famous speech ('We choose to go to the Moon') at Rice University's Rice Stadium. |
