NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center. Footage of visitors viewing spacecraft equipment and models on display at NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas, USA, during the Presidential tour of 12 September 1962. The footage includes a mock-up of the lunar lander, also known as 'the Bug' (0:15), a mock-up of a Gemini capsule attached to a paraglider (also at 0:15) and a mock-up of an Apollo command module (0:40). In 1961, US President John F. Kennedy had pledged that the USA would achieve a Moon landing before the end of the decade. This led to a massive expansion of NASA and the Apollo moon programme, including the establishment of this centre in Houston (later named the Johnson Space Center). Kennedy visited several of the newly established space centres in September 1962, visiting the Houston NASA facilities in the late morning of 12 September following his famous speech ('We choose to go to the Moon') at Rice University's Rice Stadium. |
