President Kennedy's visit to Houston. Footage of US President John F. Kennedy travelling by motor car during his visit to Houston, Texas, USA, on 12 September 1962. This footage shows Kennedy travelling from Rice University's Rice Stadium to NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center (later the Johnson Space Center). At Rice Stadium, Kennedy had just made his famous speech ('We choose to go to the Moon'). This followed on from a famous pledge he had made in 1961 that the USA would achieve a Moon landing before the end of the decade. This led to a massive expansion of NASA and the Apollo moon programme, including the establishment of this centre in Houston. This was one of several newly established space centres that Kennedy was visiting that month. |
