Atlas V launch of LRO and LCROSS. Footage of the launch on 18 June 2009 of an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, carrying the NASA satellites Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) into Earth orbit. Both satellites reached the Moon later that month. This footage shows the Atlas V rocket on the SLC-41 launch pad, surrounded by lightning protection masts. The spacecraft are inside the rocket faring (upper section). The rest of the clip shows the launch taking place successfully, with onboard cameras showing the progress into Earth orbit. One view looks back down at the launch pad just after lift-off. Later views show the cloud deck, and the Earth's limb against the darkness of space. The final parts of the clip show spent stages detaching and falling back to Earth, as well as the deployment of the payloads after reaching orbit. The Atlas V rocket launches are provided by United Launch Alliance (ULA). |
