Footage from assorted missions showing the inertia effect of firing the Space Shuttle's Reaction Control Engines and how it affects anything that's floating freely on board, including astronauts! The footage starts on the flight deck as a check list is consulted. View of a flash of light from the rear RCS engines as they are fired briefly. Storey Musgrave and a fellow STS-51f crew mate John Bartoe on the mid-deck show what happens to an open container of water stored in a locker as the engines are fired - and the water rushes out to be caught on the opposite wall with a large sheet. Astronauts Loren Acton and Karl Henize demonstrate what happens if you are lying asleep in a sleeping bag in a sleeping cell when the engines are fired. A stray apple flies out of its place as well. Gordon Fulerton and another crew mate float freely with a large roll of gaffer tape and a mission manual to show what happens when the engines are fired - and, accelerating the Shuttle and forcing them and the free floating props back into the side wall. Finally the same trick is filmed near the lockers on the mid-deck by three more astronauts and a series of floating objects including a bag of M&M sweets - all of which are hurled rapidly against the far wall as the engines are fired.
