American trypanosomiasis insect vector. Footage of a kissing bug or assassin bug (subfamily Triatominae) swelling while feeding on blood from mammalian skin. This is the insect vector responsible for transmitting American trypanosomiasis (also called Chagas disease). This tropical parasitic disease is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. The symptoms include malaise, fever, oedema of the eyelid and face, and an enlarged liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. Transmission of the parasite is through the bite of this insect as it feeds on blood. This clip is from an educational film produced in 1966 by the US National Naval Medical Center. | |
