Gonorrhoea diagnosis. Footage of a physician using a cotton bud to take a sample of the fluid produced from the penis of a man infected with gonorrhoea. After sampling the fluid, he spreads it on a glass slide to be sent away for culturing to identify the bacteria and diagnose the disease. Gonorrhoea is a venereal (sexually-transmitted) disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Infection is of the urethra, causing a discharge of yellow fluid. It readily spreads to surrounding tissues. Further spread to the blood or brain may be fatal. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs. This clip is from an educational film produced by the US Public Health Service in around 1943. | |
