American trypanosomiasis parasite. Light microscopy footage of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes American trypanosomiasis (also called Chagas disease). The symptoms of this tropical disease include malaise, fever, oedema of the eyelid and face, and an enlarged liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. It is spread mostly by insects known as Triatominae (kissing bugs or assassin bugs). This clip is from an educational film produced in 1966 by the US National Naval Medical Center. | |
