Lycopodium powder on fire. Footage of a flame being used to set Lycopodium powder on fire. Lycopodium powder comprises the dry spores of clubmoss plants (Lycopodium sp.). Dispersed in air, the spores are highly flammable because of their high fat content and their large surface area to volume ratio. When not dispersed, the spores burn much more slowly. Lycopodium powder is widely used in pyrotechnic displays and theatrical special effects, as its ignition is impressive yet safe and controllable. | |
