Ozone molecule, animation. Ozone (O3) is a triatomic molecule that consists of three oxygen atoms (red spheres) joined together. The molecule has resonance hybrid bonding, with a single bond on one side and a double bond on the other, with the resonant structure having 1.5 bonds each side. The bond angle is just over 116 degrees. Ozone is produced in the stratosphere by the action of high-energy ultraviolet (UV) radiation on oxygen. It forms a stable layer, known as the ozone layer, which screens the Earth from harmful UV radiation. Ozone is also a powerful oxidant (oxidizing agent) and air pollutant, with harmful effects on the respiratory system. | |
