Animation showing the distortion of spacetime by the gravitational effects of the Earth and the Sun. Initially, the grid shows undisturbed space with all areas at an equal gravitational potential. In the vicinity of the Earth, however, the gravitational field causes spacetime to deform, curving in so that the lines are denser the closer to Earth they are. When the same grid is shown around the Sun, the lines are deformed even more. The Sun is some 333, 000 times the mass of the Earth. This curvature of spacetime around masses is a prediction of Einstein's theory of general relativity, and has been detected by observing the deflection of light from stars passing behind the Sun, and in the gravitational lensing of distant galaxies. | |
