Hooke's Law experiment. Footage of an experiment being carried out with masses on springs to demonstrate Hooke's Law. This law states that the force (or mass) needed to extend a spring by a certain distance is proportional to that distance. In other words, doubling the mass will produce twice the extension, and tripling the mass will produce three times the extension. This is shown here for three identical springs, with a ruler being used to measure the extension of the left-hand spring which has been loaded with three times the mass placed on the spring at right. The middle spring has been loaded with a mass twice that of the spring at right. | |
