Iodine starch test on different foods. Footage of the results of an iodine starch test that has been carried out on a range of food samples in a sample tray. Where the iodine solution has turned from orange to black, that is a positive result for starch. Starch is a carbohydrate that is used by plants as a store of energy, and hence is a source of energy in many plant-based foods. This test can be used on a range of starch-containing foods. The foods tested here include cereal, potato, rice, pasta, crisps, sugar, bread, and flour. Sugar does not contain starch and gives a negative result in this test.
