Solar filament. Time-lapse Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) ultraviolet footage of a solar filament (lower left) stretching out and breaking free of the Sun. The filament was formed due to a medium-sized (C-class) flare. The SDO is an Earth-orbiting spacecraft launched in 2010 by NASA and used to observe the Sun. Here, the Sun is seen at a wavelength of 171 angstroms (extreme ultraviolet). This footage covers a period of four hours on 31 August 2012. For the same footage at 304 angstroms, see clip K005/3363. | |
