X-40A aircraft. Robotic X-40A aircraft launch, free flight and landing. The X-40A was an 85% scale model of the X-37 space plane, a reusable launch vehicle (RLV) used to examine technologies for space vehicles to reduce the cost of putting payloads into space. It was released from a Chinook helicopter. This seventh flight and landing, which occurred at Dryden Flight Research Center, California, USA, on 19th May 2001, was controlled by on-board systems.
