Supersonic research aircraft. Footage showing the preparation, launch and flight of the Bell X-1E aircraft, used in early supersonic aircraft research. This rocket-powered aeroplane was originally an X-1 aircraft, the design of the first-ever supersonic aircraft. However, it was modified in 1950 with a low-pressure fuel system, thinner wings and a pilot ejection system. Air launched from beneath a modified bomber, it was used during 1955-58 to study stability and control characteristics at high altitudes and high speeds. | |
