Copepod crustacean larva, light microscopy footage. This is a naupilius, the first larval stage of a crustacean in which the thorax and abdomen have not developed yet. Nauplii larvae do not feed, but use internal yolk reserves from the egg for energy. A naupilius has an unsegmented body and a single eye. Copepods are microscopic aquatic crustaceans found in waters around the world. They may either be free living or parasitic on other organisms. They are the main constituent of zooplankton and are therefore a very important food source for other marine animals. This clip was filmed using differential interference contrast microscopy. | |
