Human eye. Close-up view of a healthy human eye, starting from the side and panning round to finish in front. The front of the eye is covered by the cornea which is transparent and protrudes slightly. The cornea is the main lens of the eye and performs most of the focusing. The pupil (centre) dilates and constricts with small variations in light levels. It is surrounded by the iris, a pigmented structure mostly composed of smooth muscle. The iris gives the eye its colour and controls the size of the pupil, and therefore the amount of entering the eye. | |
