Meibomian glands of a human eye. Macroscopic footage of meibomian glands (or tarsal glands) on the rim of the lower eyelid of a human eye. These glands, which appear as a row of dots, are a special kind of sebaceous gland. They produce meibum, an oily substance which prevents evaporation of the eye's tear film, prevents tears spilling over the rim of the eye, and creates an air-tight seal when the eye is closed. The upper eyelid has approximately 50 glands and the lower eyelid 25 glands. | |
