Heart cells. Fluorescence microscopy footage of a cultured neonatal heart cell (cardiomyocyte), showing calcium sparking (green) from the cell nuclei. Calcium sparking is a form of 'local control' where calcium ions are released by cardiac muscle cells. This is part of the process by which heart muscle contracts. The cell is being examined in culture. The calcium ion flux is made visible using a fluorescent probe.
