This shows where calcium ions are being released by the cardiac muscle cell, part of the process by which heart muscle contracts. The cell is being examined in culture, and has dedifferentiated and regressed to a foetal form, which is thought to happen in cardiac ischemia. The calcium ion flux is made visible using a fluorescent probe. | |
