Volvox algal colony. Light microscopy close-up footage panning across a colony of the freshwater green alga Volvox globator. The colony is a hollow sphere made up from thousands of cells arranged in a single layer. The cells are connected by thin strands of cytoplasm, and each cell has a green chloroplast with a red eyespot and two long flagella used for locomotion. Inside the colony, an embryo for a daughter colony is visible. The diameter of the somatic (vegetative) cells is less than 10 micrometres. A colony can grow to more than 1 millimetre in diameter. | |
