Vampyrella cyst forming. Light microscopy footage of a Vampyrella lateritia digestive cyst (round) forming while attached to a strand of Spirogyra algae (tubular). This clip was obtained 9 minutes after the cell attached to the algal strand. Vampyrella is a unicellular micro-organism sometimes described as a 'vampire amoeba'. It attacks other microscopic organisms, such as algae, and penetrates their cell walls and extracts the contents. After feeding, the trophozoite stage forms this cyst and divides to form daughter cells. Vampyrella are found in aquatic freshwater environments, with other vampyrellid species found in soil and in the sea. | |
