Vorticella swarmer. Light microscopy footage of Vorticella campanula, a ciliate protozoan, transforming from its stalked stage to its mobile (swarmer) stage. The peristome opening has been retracted, the contractile stalk (myoneme) is gone, and a new aboral collar of cilia (the teleotroch) has formed. Vorticella live in both marine and freshwater environments. They feed on microscopic algae, bacteria and other food in the water. This is a freshwater specimen. | |
