Vorticella protozoa. Light microscopy footage of an array of Vorticella campanula, a ciliate protozoan. They consist of a bell-shaped head and peristome (opening), with a stalk that anchors the head to a substrate (bottom). The cilia (tiny hair-like structures) surrounding the peristome are used to capture food and also for movement. Vorticella live in both marine and freshwater environments, and feed on microscopic algae, bacteria and other food in the water. When disturbed, the stalk is contracted in a protective motion, seen several times in this clip. These are freshwater specimens. | |
