Pinnularia diatom dividing, light microscopy footage. This diatom is seen in profile (girdle view). It is at a late stage of cell division. Its siliceous cell wall is divided into two halves, one of which fits within the edges of the other like a box with a lid. Diatoms are single-celled algae that form an important part of the plankton at the base of the marine and freshwater food chains. Filmed in a sample of water from a ditch on the North Sea island of Amrum, Germany. | |
